Giacomo Boni, nato a Venezia il 25 aprile 1859, morto a Roma il 10 luglio 1925. Dopo aver intrapreso studi tecnici e commerciali, partecipò a Venezia ai lavori di restauro del Palazzo Ducale. Nel corso dei lavori il Boni manifestò immediatamente le sue doti di disegnatore di grande qualità, particolarmente attento al rispetto del carattere storico dei monumenti antichi. Frequentò i corsi di architettura all’Accademia di Belle Arti, approfondì gli studi classici e strinse legami con il mondo culturale inglese, finché nel 1888 fu chiamato a Roma dal ministro dell’Istruzione P. Boselli, prima come segretario consistent with l. a. Regia Calcografia, poi come ispettore dei monumenti presso l. a. Direzione Generale delle Antichità e Belle Arti, a capo della quale period allora G. Fiorelli .
Nel 1898 il Ministro della Pubblica Istruzione G. Baccelli gli affidò los angeles direzione degli scavi del Foro Romano.
La complessa attività di studio e di ricerca, condotta in maniera particolarmente intensa soprattutto tra il 1899 e il 1905, è testimoniata dai documenti (carteggi e disegni) conservati principalmente nell’Archivio della Soprintendenza Speciale in line with i Beni Archeologici di Roma, presso los angeles sede di S. Maria Nova, al Palatino.
Le indagini archeologiche furono eseguite mediante l’applicazione del metodo dello scavo stratigrafico, che consentiva di recuperare tutti i dati utili alla ricostruzione storica dell’area. I lavori di scavo portarono alla scoperta di importanti monumenti del Foro Romano (Niger Lapis, Regia, Gallerie Cesaree, Horrea Agrippiana, necropoli arcaica presso il tempio di Antonino e Faustina ).
Nel 1907 l’Ufficio degli scavi del Foro comprese anche los angeles zona del Palatino, dove il Boni riportò in luce una cisterna a tholos (il Mundus), il complesso di gallerie sotterranee advert essa annesse, los angeles Casa dei Grifi, los angeles c. d. Aula Iliaca, i c. d. Bagni di Tiberio e un fondo di capannasotto il peristilio della Domus Flavia.
L’attività del Boni si interruppe con lo scoppio della prima guerra mondiale; egli partecipò al conflitto e, tornato dal fronte, si ammalò. Riprese le ricerche archeologiche nel 1916 e fu in seguito nominato Senatore il three marzo 1923; durante il periodo fascista aderì alle motivazioni ideologiche del fascismo, nel quale individuava l. a. continuazione dell’idea dell’antica Roma e dell’impero Romano.
Morì a Roma il 1925 e fu sepolto al centro degli Orti Farnesiani sul Palatino.
